The remnants of Klaipeda Castle are located on the left side of the mouth of the Dane River. The Prince Friedrich and Carl bastions, western fortified island and a rampart have survived until our days. The remnants are preserved. There is a museum arranged in the Friedrich bastion. In the 13th – 14th c. this castle was important structure to Livonian Ordin and to Teutonic Order later on. Since the middle of the 18th c. the fortress lost its defensice meaning. A bishop from Kursh Henrich was leading the works of construction in 1252. In 1559 a frenchman Klaudijus Dzonotijus prepared a plan of how to strengthen the castle. In 1660 an actor-french officer Bellicome became the author the fortification of the bastions. The first caslte was of the enclosure type. It consisted of a quadrangular square surrounded by the stone walls, a rampart and a moat. There were wooden and brick buildings in the yard. In 1409 the castle was surrounded by defensive fence. The castle had a masive bulk and a quadrangular tower. It was surrounded by the ramparts and brick bastėjos. In 1546 the Bastėjos were built with the poternos in it. The castle was being improved and rebuilt until Russian army occupied Klaipeda in 1546 and the castle lost its military purpose. It sarted to wrack.
